Liverpool apologise to Southampton and end Virgil van Dijk pursuit

Liverpool have publicly apologised to Southampton over their pursuit of defender Virgil van Dijk and say that they are no longer trying to sign the player.

Southampton had asked the Premier League to investigate their top flight rivals, for a possible illegal approach.

Liverpool have now issued a statement saying they are sorry for any "misunderstanding".

"Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs," said the Anfield club.

"We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

"We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player."
