Liverpool legend Terry McDermott on the "awe" of first signing for the club

Terry McDermott played for Liverpool during the most successful period in the club's history, winning three European Cups and six league titles.

He spoke to Off the Ball's Kevin Kilbane on Tuesday about his early career and the nerves he had when he first joined his boyhood club, Liverpool.

"Maybe I was a bit over-awed at the time," he said, adding: "It's my club. It's where I'm born and bred in Scotland Road in Liverpool. I lived in Kirkby until I was about eight. It was a tough upbringing but we used to always find money to go and watch Liverpool playing. They were my idols.

"I played against them in an FA Cup final - I was in awe of it really but luckily enough I got over that. I just wanted to win for Newcastle, that's all I was concerned about.

"I'm on the pitch with Kevin Keegan and I couldn't believe it - Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Phil Thompson.

"At that particular time - they were my idols. Little did I know at the time, I didn't think I'd be over-awed because I thought I'd done it before - played in an FA Cup final, played in the First Division with Newcastle, it should have been a dawdle."
