Louis Van Gaal dismisses resignation rumours following draw against Chelsea

Despite the progressive nature of United's result against Chelsea yesterday, the media continued to ask the questions that have been troubling Louis Van Gaal of late.

But in the face of persistent inquiries, and a consecutive run of eight matches without a win, the Dutchman vowed to commit to the Old Trafford faithful.

Speaking after the Chelsea game last night, Van Gaal dispelled of any hints of a resignation and elected to concentrate on the positive attitude in the United dressing room.

'Inside of the club the players are willing to fight for every metre, the manager is willing to fight, the members of staff are willing to fight and the board is very confident in the staff and the manager so it (the negativity) is not inside Manchester United.'

The opening half was Man United's most encouraging display of the last few weeks and it was a performance they craved for in order to resuscitate their hopes for 2016. But regardless of their renewed sense of purpose, some sections of the fanbase could not overlook the fact that this is the lowest position on the table that their side has been in the last 26 seasons.

Red scarves depicting Jose Mourinho's face were being sold unofficially by vendors outside the stadium while others in the crowd made it known they wanted the Portuguese coach to replace the current boss during the game.

But Van Gaal sought solace in the cheers of those who appreciated the valiant efforts of this United outfit. He did however admit, that he has not control on how his employers will act in the coming days.

'I cannot have any influence on that. I can only work with my players and you have seen that the players are fighting for me; they have given a good performance. After this result the fans were applauding. I cannot say that I am very much concerned, but in this football world you never know. When the players can give such a performance with this lot of pressure then it is not any reason to resign for me.'

'I am under contract so it's not a question of staying, it is a question of fulfilling my contract. I think it was a very good performance but you have to score a goal and we didn't.'
