Man United hold EFL Cup advantage as they see off battling Hull City

Manchester United hold a 2-0 lead heading into the EFL Cup semi final second leg after defeating Hull City at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho's side took 56 minutes to break the deadlock before Juan Mata put United in front.

Maroune Fellaini put the Reds in the ascendancy with a second goal three minutes from time.

Hull were playing their second match since the appointment of new head coach Marco Silva.

At the weekend, they had defeated fellow Premier League strugglers Swansea 2-0 in the FA Cup.

And they kept Man United scoreless for the entirety of the first half of their EFL Cup semi final first leg.

United took the lead on 56 minutes when Henrik Mkhitaryan guided an Antonio Valencia cross to the far side of the box where Mata was lurking.

The Spanish midfielder tapped in to give the home side the lead.

Paul Pogba, who has hit the woodwork six times prior to tonight's match, did so again when curled a free kick onto the post as Man United came close to going 2-0 up.

But Fellaini made sure that they would take a two goal advantage into the second leg when he got to the same far post that Mata had scored at and got his head onto a Matteo Darmian cross and guided the ball over the line.

The second leg takes place on January 27th.

The second semi final tie takes place on Wednesday between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary's Stadium.
