Manchester United open to extending Jose Mourinho's contract after seven months in charge

Manchester United are considering extending the contract of manager Jose Mourinho longer than his current three-year deal with the club.

Mourinho, who signed on with the club in May following the departure of Louis van Gaal, has endured an inconsistent start as United boss. An early run of good form was soon followed by patchy form both in the Europa League and the Premier League.

The Portuguese has managed to steady the ship in recent weeks with victories over Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

The Guardian report that Mourinho himself is keen to stay on past the end of his current contract and the club's owners, the Glazer family, are also behind that decision.

United are unbeaten in their last 10 games and finished one point off top spot in their Europa League group.

Mourinho previously expressed his desire to stay with the club for "many years" and looks to be investing in players to stay for the long term. Eric Bailly was one of Mourinho's first purchases with the club and he has also been able to bring in big names such as former Borussia Dortmund winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlata Ibrahimovic.

Should he stay past his current contract, there have been rumours that he anything up to 2025 and help United secure a 21st league title.
