Manchester United reach EFL Cup final despite loss to Hull

Manchester United have booked their place in the EFL Cup final where Southampton await.

Jose Mourinho's side went through despite losing the second leg of their semi final against Hull City.

Their 2-0 winning margin two weeks ago meant tonight's 2-1 away defeat at the KCOM Stadium did not prove detrimental as the Reds advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

Hull took the lead on 35 minutes towards the end of what had up to then been an uneventful first half.

After a coming together in the United box, referee Jonathan Moss pointed to the penalty spot.

Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone stepped up to convert to leave the scores 1-0 at the break.

However, United got a crucial equaliser after 66 minutes.

Marcus Rashford drove into the box and the ball eventually fell back to Paul Pogba who was lurking in the area.

The club's record signing then poked the ball through the legs of Harry Maguire and past goalkeeper David Marshall.

Hull did not give in however. Ireland midfielder David Meyler received a pass on the right channel and he squared the ball across goal for Oumar Niasse to make it 2-1 on the night.

But it wasn't enough for the Tigers who will turn their attention to their Premier League survival battle.

Man United meanwhile will take on a Southampton side that knocked out Liverpool by beating the Merseysiders 1-0 both home and away.

United last won the trophy in 2010.
