Manchester United to pay tribute to Berkeley victims before pre-season friendly in California

Manchester United will observe a minute's silence before their pre-season friendly against San Jose Earthquakes tonight, as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the Berkeley tragedy last month.

Eimear Walsh, Lorcan Miller, Eoghan Culligan, Niccolai Schuster, Olivia Burke and Irish-American citizen Ashley Donohoe all died tragically when the balcony they were standing on collapsed beneath them.

The tribute was organised by friends of the victims and will take place before kick-off at 8pm local time (4am Irish time).

New Manchester United signing, World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger, paid tribute to Mr Schuster when a picture appeared on social media which featured the student posing alongside the German international.

Friends of the 21-year-old wore Bayern Munich shirts during his funeral in honour of his love for the club.

A tweet from St Mary's college official Twitter account read:"A minute's silence for Berkeley just before kick-off in tonight's game. Thanks to all."

Manchester United kicked off their pre-season tour with a 1-0 over Club America, new signing Morgan Schneiderlin grabbing the winner on his debut.
