Marseille issued a strange statement after signing Steven Fletcher

On Deadline Day, Steven Fletcher completed a shock move to Marseille, as he went in search of first team opportunities which he was unable to find at Sunderland under Sam Allardyce.

The Scot will appear in front of the fans at the Velodrome until the end of the season, and a statement on the club's website announced to those who follow Olympique de Marseille that he was joining up with the squad paid him a rather strange tribute.

According to The Daily Record, the statement that accompanied his signing for the team said "He will not leave you unmoved. He will not go unnoticed. Marseille has added a Scotsman to the mix. And if you know anything about the mentality of that people, you'll know that's good news".

That wasn't all, however, as once the poetic description of the player's attitude was out of the way, they added that "he may not be known as a technical player, but he is 1.85m tall".

Fletcher will wear the number nine shirt until the end of the season, but more importantly, will he become the new Tony Cascarino?
