Marseille's Velodrome to host Tour de France time-trial

Tour de France organisers have released details of next year's route, with a time-trial scheduled to begin and conclude in Marseille's Stade Velodrome.

The home of Olympique de Marseille, which was used during Euro 2016, will be the epicentre, for what could be the defining moment of the three-week race. A 23 kilometre time-trial will take place in the city, the day before the race concludes on the Champs-Elysees.

As previously announced, the race will begin in the German city of Dusseldorf on July 1st, moving into Belgium, before eventually reaching France. It will be the first time the race begins in Germany in 30 years.

"This Tour de France route has been designed to be won by a true champion," Tour director Christian Prudhomme announced at the launch of the route in Paris.

After this year's race that saw yellow jersey winner Chris Froome fall off his bike, due to large crowds on Mont Ventoux, race organisers also revealed that over 10 kilometres of crucial mountainous terrain will be free of fans.

Team Sky's Chis Froome will be defending his title in the race, looking to win for the third year in a row.
