Maurice Fitzgerald to be named as a new Kerry selector

Maurice Fitzgerald, one of the most talented footballers of the 1990s, is to be ratified as a selector to the Kerry senior football team, on Monday evening.

The two-time All-Ireland winner, who was also the 1997 Footballer of the Year, replaces former goalkeeper Diarmuid Murphy as one of Eamonn Fitzmaurice's selectors. The Kerry manager claimed that Fitzgerald's "football knowledge, work ethic and personality will be a huge asset to us".

Fitzgerald led his club St Mary’s Cahersiveen to All-Ireland Intermediate glory earlier this year in Croke Park. They defeated the Mayo club Hollymount-Carramore in February.

Fitzgerald joins Padraig Corcoran, Mikey Sheehy and Liam Hassett in the Kerry backroom team, ahead of the 2017 season. The Munster champions begin their league campaign away to Donegal on February 5th.

Last season, Kerry reached the All-Ireland semi-finals after a 0-22 o 2-14 loss to Dublin. The Kingdom faithful will hope that the addition of Fitzgerald to the backroom team will lead to glory, as Kerry look to win their first All-Ireland title since 2014.
