McGregor-Mayweather inching closer

Rumours of a cross-over super-fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have gathered pace in recent days.

While the fight was originally scoffed at in many quarters, UFC President Dana White confirmed last week that he is ready to negotiate with Mayweather's camp - partially as a payback to the Dubliner for saving a number of UFC pay-per-view cards.

The Irishman took fights against Nate Diaz and Chad Mendes on less than two weeks notice after late withdrawals from his original opponents.

Speaking on the MMAHour, McGregor's manager Audie Attar said: "Listen, I think there’s fan interest, and I think that’s brought us to a point where this may happen but we’ll see. Nothing is set in stone. I think it’s one of those things that’s a work in progress, but it’s definitely trending in the right direction.

"I think first and foremost it’s just the fan interest. I think Floyd and Conor organically just going back and forth, that kind of picked up the fan interest. Credit to Dana White and the UFC for recognising a huge opportunity and wanting to be involved. I think that’s really the - I would say - 'evolution' of this whole thing.

"I think in today’s age of social media and media picking up on story lines and banter, people can also quantify and measure the viability of something like this from a business standpoint. It’s all happening organically, which is good."

Mayweather is a notoriously difficult negotiator and any talks could take months to conclude. It took almost five years for the American to eventually agree to a fight with Manny Pacquiao in boxing's so-called 'Fight of the Century' in May 2015.

However, at 40 years of age, time mightn't be on his side this time.
