Mexico gears up for its super fight

Only a few days have passed and giddy hardcore boxing fans are preparing for their second genuine super-fight in the space of two weeks.

Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko's heavyweight brawl last Saturday at Wembley Stadium delivered more excitement and action than those in attendance could have hoped for. It reinvigorated a sport which was crying out for the return of its marquee division.

This week, it's Mexico's chance to turn back the clock and remind the world of the glorious fighters the nation has produced.

There are two ideal weekends in any calendar year to host a huge fight involving Mexican fighters: Cinco de Mayo in May and Mexican Independence Day in September.

The former celebrates an unlikely victory over the French in 1862 and will be celebrated this weekend.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Junior (son of the legend by the same name) square off at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The likelihood of the country having two top stars in the same weight division has evoked memories of nearly a decade ago when world witnessed the Erik Morrales/Marco-Antonio Barrera and Israel Vazquez/Rafael Marquez rivalries unfold.

The build-up to the fight has had some edge to it as well with both fighters showing a genuine dislike for one another.

During a recent conference call, Chavez Jr. admitted as much saying: "Yes, there’s a real, true rivalry and on Saturday night, people are going to see first-hand this rivalry, how real it is. Obviously we’re going to show it inside the ring."

Junior was always going to live in the shadow of his illustrious father - regarded as possibly Mexico's finest ever fighter. He chose to follow in his father's footsteps and has a massed a respectable pro record of 50-2-1 which includes a stoppage win over Ireland's former world champion boxer, Andy Lee.

Alvarez as only lost one fight in 50 and that was a decision loss to one of the great fighters of all time; Floyd Mayweather.

He holds a far lofty CV than his opponent which includes wins over Shane Mosely, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan and goes into the bout on a six-fight win-streak.
