Mexico's manager shown the door for allegedly punching reporter

Mexico manager Miguel Herrera has been sacked by the country's football federation for allegedly punching a reporter.

The 47-year-old, who took over the job in October 2013 in the midst of a terrible run in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, had only led the nation to Gold Cup glory two days ago.

TV journalist Christian Martinioli, who has been a critic of the manager, had claimed that he had been struck in the neck and threatened by Herrera at Philadelphia airport after Mexico had beaten Jamaica in the Gold Cup final.

However, while Herrera admits he argued with the reporter, he denies engaging in physical violence, while airport officials have no knowledge of an incident taking place.

Either way the federation cut ties with the manager, with incoming president Decio de Maria saying: "Matches never finish, and as public figures we have to keep that in mind. Everyone has had an opinion but as I said, our values have to be kept and no one can be above the type of situation we saw on Monday at the Philadelphia airport."

Herrera, who became a sudden cult figure at last year's World Cup due to his passionate antics on the sideline and his use of Twitter, led Mexico to the second round at the tournament before being controversially defeated by the Netherlands.
