Former Manchester United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes believes the key to getting the most out of record signing Paul Pogba lies with Michael Carrick.

The Frenchman has failed to have the sort of instant impact fans expect of the €105 million signing after returning to the club last month.

Speaking on BT in the wake of United's 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the Europa League last night, Scholes said that Carrick's ability to control a game will liberate Pogba.

"He’s not the greatest controller of a football game," he began.

"You have to remember he came from a brilliant team at Juventus. Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio could control the game and let him go and do his thing.

"I would like to see Michael Carrick with him. He can direct him and tell him where to go."
