Michael Conlan loses Olympic quarter-final

Michael Conlan has lost his Olympic quarter-final in controversial circumstances.

The World Champion lost Russia's Vladimir Nikitin in their Bantamweight quarter-final in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday afternoon.

Conlan's loss means that Ireland's boxers will leave the Olympic Games without a medal for the first time since 2004.

The Belfast fighter lost the first round on all three judge's scorecards controversially, but won the second to level the fight going into the final round.

In a very tense third round, the Russian was given the win, by all three judges. The result was widely ridiculed from all sides,

Nikitin will meet America's Shakur Stevenson or Mongolia's Tsendbaatar Erdenebat in the semi-final on Thursday afternoon at 2.30pm.

Speaking to RTE after the loss, Conlan called the AIBA "cheating bastards" and vowed never to compete in amateur competitions again.

"AIBA are cheats... They're paying everybody... I was here to win Olympic gold. My dreams are shattered now".
