Michael Conlan responds in defiant fashion after AIBA issue him with maximum fine

Michael Conlan has issued a defiant a response after the International Boxing Association for amateurs (AIBA) decided to fine him heavily for his post fight interview after his controversial elimination at the Rio Olympics.

The Belfast boxer suffered a questionable defeat to Russia's Vladimir Nikitin in Rio and accused the AIBA of being "cheats" in an RTE TV interview after his defeat.

As a result, the organisation has decided to issue their maximum fine of €9,300 to the Irish fighter.

Conlan, however, laughed off the idea that he would pay it.

He took to Twitter with a pictorial response with the lines "You best give up now. Coz you ain't gon take my money".

Speaking to The Irish News, Conlan said it was down to the principle of the matter, having felt unfairly treated at the Olympics: "If the fine was £10, I still wouldn’t pay it and that’s the truth - I wouldn’t pay it if it was £1."

He also added that, "When it comes to that stage, we’ll come to that stage, but it’s not going to happen. By the time I want to be a coach or whatever, those people won’t be in charge. I don’t know why they want to continue this. The fact they’ve fined me, it doesn’t bother me at all because until the day I die, I’ll never pay that fine."

The 25-year-old is no longer part of the amateur ranks, having signed pro terms with Top Ranks promotions.

He will make his pro debut on March 17th at New York's Madison Square Gardens, with friend and fellow former Team Ireland boxer also on the fight card.

Conlan won bronze at London 2012.
