Michael Jordan donates $2million to try and help end gun violence in America

"Republicans buy sneakers too".

Those four immortal words have followed Michael Jordan throughout his playing career, as the former Chicago Bulls player refused to become involved in current affairs and social matters.

Despite being one of the most recognisable African-American athletes in the World, the 53-year-old regularly refused to become involved in commenting about events off the court.

Now the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, Jordan was written an open letter on The Undefeated about the state of America in the present day. Tensions between the African American community and the Police is at an all-time high, with members of both sides having been killed in altercations in recent weeks.

Jordan, whose father was shot dead in 1993, has decided to donate money to two organisations in a bid to try and mend relationships between both sides.

"I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations", he wrote. "The International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing."

"My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference."

Jordan has followed in the footsteps of five current NBA stars including Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James in calling for an end to gun-violence in America.
