Micheál Donoghue in the running to take charge of Galway hurlers

Micheál Donoghue has emerged as the front runner to succeed Anthony Cunningham as Galway hurling manager, the Irish Independent are today reporting.

The paper say that a number of bets have been taken on Donoghue to succeed Cunningham, forcing bookmakers John Mulholland to close the book on the succession.

Donoghue managed Clarinbridge to the All-Ireland club title in 2011 and looks set to be appointed manager in the coming weeks if the rumours are to be believed.

Damien Coleman, Malachy Hanley and Tex Callaghan are currently at the helm of the team as Galway prepare to fly to Boston for the AIG Fenway Classic against Dublin at the home of the Red Sox baseball team this weekend.

County board chairman, Noel Treacy, said: "We're not going to rush it, we're obviously not in a great place and we have to get this right."

The paper reports: "...the first 37 bets they took were on Donoghue, who has been extensively linked with the position with some speculation locally of a partnership with former Tipperary manager and coach Eamon O'Shea, who lives in the city.

"However, it would be a major surprise if O'Shea was to jump straight back into inter-county management."

O'Shea this morning ruled himself out of a return to the county stating: “I’m retired. In the same way as the four guys have retired, I’m retired. I won’t be getting involved.”

Galway's Management Committee met last night to formally begin the process of finding a successor to Cunningham.
