Michel Platini to appeal eight year ban from football-related activity

Michel Platini has confirmed he will appeal his eight-year ban from football-related activity on Monday.

The FIFA presidential candidate and former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, were handed the bans by FIFA's ethics committee last month.

However, they were informed on Saturday that they were free to proceed with appeals after FIFA's ethics committee provided them with the full written reasons for their suspensions.

A statement released by the committee outlines that "the adjudicatory chamber of the independent ethics committee has fulfilled its commitment to provide the grounds for the respective decisions to Mr Blatter and Mr Platini within the first half of January 2016 as they had previously been informed".

"After receiving the grounds for the decisions, both officials may lodge an appeal with the FIFA appeal committee."

The bans were imposed after a payment of £1.3m was made to Platini in 2011 and was signed off by Blatter at a time when he was preparing to stand for a fourth term as FIFA president.

The payment was said to have “no legal basis”, but was the result of an oral agreement between the two.
