Mick McCarthy on sheer the "nonsense" of the January window

On Wednesday, Off The Ball's Kevin Kilbane turns the big 40 and that occasion wasn't going to pass by without it being marked.

So aside from some birthday cake and the present of a Mayo jersey, a few familiar faces called in to say an early "Happy Birthday" to the former Ireland international.

One was former Boys in Green manager Mick McCarthy, who is currently in charge of Ipswich Town in the Championship.

It's a busy month for managers in all the divisions and Ipswich is no different. Not that it's easy to get a deal done.

"This is a pleasant interlude into the nonsense I've been listening to for the last 30 days," said Big Mick.

"Everybody ringing me up with the best players that are not available, the ones I don't want, the ones I can't afford and the ones I've got not a clue who they are. It's just nonsense, it really is. It's a nice change not to be talking to an agent who's got the best player in the world for free."

With Kevin's birthday providing that welcome interlude, McCarthy explained that Ipswich would scout through the season and have their favourite options targeted for potential signings. Even in that case, it doesn't get much easier to get deals over the line.

He continued: "But this transfer window has been nuts. We've made bids for players and they've all been knocked back, where in the summer they might have accepted those bids. But there are no emergency loans now so we all need bigger squads. Everybody's keeping hold of their players or because of that they're more expensive."
