Mick McGowan knocked out of the World Darts Championship

Meath darts player Mick McGowan was one of the first players to be knocked out of the PDC World Darts Championship, on Thursday night.

'The Magnet', competing in his fourth World Championship was drawn against the number 30 seed Jamie Lewis, in the first round. 

McGowan failed to win a leg in the opening set, before taking the second-set 3-1. The players traded further sets, before Lewis won the decider 3-1, to win three sets to two.

Back-to-back World Champion Gary Anderson also advanced to the second round. He was a 3-0 winner over Mark 'Frosty the Throwman' Frost, conceding only two legs in the match.

Former World finalist Kevin Painter was the first player into the second round defeated Jamie Caven 3-1 in the opening game of the night. It's the eighth time in the last nine years that 'The Artist' has reached the second round at Alexandra Palace.

The final game of the night saw Michael Smith throw the highest average of the tournament. His 96.78 average, helped him defeat Ricky Evans, 3-2.

Friday's games sees Peter Wright and former World Champion Steve Beaton in action in their first round matches.
