Mike Phelan shares his view on his Hull City replacement Marco Silva

Recently sacked Hull City boss Mike Phelan says the club's owners must give funds to new head coach Marco Silva for signings this transfer window.

Their lack of squad depth was highlighted on Tuesday night as just six substitutes were named for their 2-0 EFL Cup semifinal first leg defeat at Manchester United.

Ex-Man United assistant Phelan told Sky Sports News that Silva looks up for the challenge of keeping the Tigers in the top flight.

"It's a fresh idea. He's going to go in there very committed," he said.

When asked if the owners may revise their transfer policy and spend more heavily in the remainder of January to try and help the club out of the relegation zone, Phelan believes it's a question of waiting and seeing.

"Time will tell. The same scenario may happen again. But I'm no longer there, it's a new guy in charge, he'll have his own ideas. The players are not a problem. The players are fantastic," he said.

Following the sudden departure of Steve Bruce in July, Phelan became caretaker manager for the opening months of the season until he was confirmed as head coach in October.

However, the season had been fraught with difficulty when it came to results.

When Phelan was sacked, the Tigers had collected just 13 points from 20 games, with two of their three wins coming on the first two match days of the league season.

From September 17th to October 29th, the Tigers endured a run of six defeats.

Their last league victory came on November 6th against Southampton.
