The Belarusian capital of Minsk looks set to host the 2019 European Games.

An idea of Pat Hickey, the European Games were created to give participants a continental competition, in the Olympic tradition. Asia, Africa and the Americas have all hosted Games in recent years.

The Associated Press have reported comments by state news agency Belta, quoting the Belarusian Olympic vice president Maxim Ryzhenkov. Mr, Ryzhenkov claims "our European partners are very interested in the second European Games taking place in Belarus."

"The main issue is the budget," Ryzhenkov added. "The second European Games demand the investment of significant sums. It's necessary to carefully consider and weigh up everything."

Amsterdam was originally due to host the event in 2019, but the Dutch city pulled out last year due to a lack of funds and domestic support.

In 2015, Ireland won six medals in the inaugural Games. Boxers Katie Taylor and Michael O'Reilly won gold. There were also medals won in boxing and badminton as Ireland finished 24th in the medal table.
