Mo Farah and Andy Murray knighted while Jessica Ennis-Hill is made a dame

Andy Murray along with Olympians Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill, were among those recognised on a New Year honours list.

Both Murray and Farah were awarded with knighthoods, while Ennis-Hill was made a dame.

For Murray, it rounded off a sensational 2016 in which he claimed his second Wimbledon title, defended his Olympic crown and overtook his rival Novak Djokovic as the world number one player. While his final tournament of the year ended in disappointment, following a semi-final exit at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, it was an exhibition event that wouldn't be of huge consequence.

His next project will be to try and claim an elusive first Australian Open in the new year. In a modest response to receiving the honour, Murray told British media:

“I still feel like Andy Murray – that feels more normal – but I am happy with the knighthood and it is a nice way to start the new year."

Mo Farah retained his 5,000m and 10,000m gold medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016. His 10,000m success was particularly astonishing, considering he fell early on in the race but still managed to recover and take the top podium spot.

Speaking about his new status, Farah said:

"I am so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight. Looking back at the boy who arrived here from Somalia, not speaking any English, I could never have imagined where I would be today – it is a dream come true."

Ennis-Hill announced her retirement from athetics this year after winning a silver medal in the Heptahlon at the Rio Games. She previously won a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.  She retires as an Olympic, World and European champion.
