Monaco insist that they turned down an even bigger bid for Anthony Martial

The size of the transfer fee handed over for Anthony Martial was a huge talking point as the summer transfer window closed, but Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev states that there were bigger offers on the table.

The young Martial hasn't let the pressure of a huge price tag (rumoured to be €50 million plus a further €30 million in bonuses) get to him and has made a fantastic start to his career at Manchester United, but there was apparently an even better option financially for the French club.

Speaking to Spanish paper Marca, Vasilyev explained that not only was there a bigger bid lodged by another club which he did not name, but they were willing to loan the player back to Monaco for another year.

The guaranteed money would have had seen more cash end up on Monaco's books, but it was turned down for one reason, according to the vice-president: "the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of €30 million. Had it not been for so much money, he'd have stayed".

He also reiterated that they didn't want to sell the player at all, but simply couldn't turn down the money and deny the dream of the young footballer, something that's sure to endear him even further to fans at Old Trafford.
