Munster end pool stage on a high but Stade Francais leave Ulster feeling low

Munster picked up a bonus point victory in their final pool match of this season's Champions Cup.

Already eliminated from the competition ahead to today's trip to Italy where they faced Benetton Treviso, Anthony Foley's side ran in four tries in a 28-5 victory.

Ronan O'Mahony notched two tries on the day, and got the oval ball rolling early on with a try on four minutes which was set up by Conor Murray.

Twelve minutes later it was 14-0 to Munster as Francis Saili added another try.

The province weren't home and hosed by half-time however, with the concession of a Marco Lazzaroni try which left the scores at 14-5 to Munster at the break.

Treviso did not get any closer to Munster in the second '40 as Murray broke through for a 49th minute try, followed closely by another from Ronan O'Mahony after Jack O'Donoghue's break.

However, there was bad news for Ulster as their hopes of a Champions Cup quarter-final spot evaporated in France.

Clinging to a place in the Top 8 as one of the pool stages' best runners-up after yesterday's victory over Oyonnax, they needed Stade Francais to slip up to already qualified Leicester Tigers this afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Irish province, the French side ran in five tries, one more than they needed to get the bonus point to pip Ulster to a final quarter-final spot.

They finish the pool stage on 19 points - one clear of Ulster - after a 36-21 win over Leicester.

And as a piece of unwanted history, it means this season is the first since 1997-98 when there is no Irish representation at the knockout stage of European rugby's premier rugby competitions.
