Munster's Johnny Holland may have to consider early retirement due to ongoing injury trouble

Munster's Johnny Holland may have to consider premature retirement due to ongoing injury problems.

The outhalf, who was a favourite to start this season, has been nursing a hamstring injury since 2014 and is expected to make a final decision on his future some time this week.

Holland tore his hamstring off the bone while playing for Munster's Development squad. He played just seven times last year, one of which was against Leinster in April when he got the nod ahead of Ian Keatley. He has played 11 times in total since making his debut in 2013.

Holland, who turns 25 this week, now joins a high profile list of Irish rugby players who have suffered a similar injury including Richardt Strauss, Cian Healy, Seán O'Brien, Paul O'Connell and Iain Henderson.

O'Connell was immediately substituted when he suffered the injury in his last game for Ireland at the Rugby World Cup. He was planning a move to Toulon but was forced to withdraw due to the injury and subsequently announced his retirement from the sport.
