The Spanish tennis star has seen his stock fall as he slipped to his lowest placing of number 10 in the world, but is confident that he can rediscover his form in the coming year.

Nadal's form has turned around slightly in recent months, but having been knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon and the third round at the US Open, he was the first to admit that he did not perform as well as he would have wanted.

Speaking to AP and the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) event in Manila on Monday, he said "I think it’s obvious that I did not have the best season possible, but I am number five in the world so actually it’s not a disaster".

He has been plagued by injuries, including needing an operation on his appendix in late 2014, and has failed to recapture anything approaching his best form since. However, in recent weeks he has faced and beaten Andy Murray and David Ferrer in competition, suggesting that he's trending back in the right direction.

"I think I finished it very well this season and I want to continue it that way [...] I don't know if I'm going to win it (number one) back, (but) I'm working hard to create opportunities to compete for the best tournaments and I’m working so hard to try to make that happen".

He further stated that he was finally healthy, and getting ready to make an impact on the majors circuit this year. He may look to start that journey back to to the top with an appearance in the Australian Open next month.
