Natalya Coyle finishes seventh in modern pentathlon at Rio

Natalya Coyle finished in seventh place in Rio in the modern pentathlon after a strong performance over the duration of the events.

Coyle finished 47 seconds behind winner Chloe Esposito of Australia, who started the final round in seventh place and produced a fantastic shooting and running combination to overtake Oktawia Nowacka of Poland, who was ranked first as they entered the final event. She finished in a time of 12.55.19.

Coyle was well placed after the showjumping round, in which she registered no faults and earned the full 300 points. That saw her come into the event in fifth place, however she fell back in the shooting and running round, which pushed her back down the leaderboard and into seventh place.

Fellow Team Ireland athlete and modern pentathlon star Arthur Lanigan O'Keeffe took to Twitter to congratulate Coyle on her performance, which saw her improve from a ninth-place finish in London in 2012 up to seventh in Rio.
