Nathan Redmond takes centre stage as Southampton edge Liverpool in EFL Cup first leg

Nathan Redmond was at the centre of it all as Southampton earned a 1-0 victory over Liverpool after the first of their EFL Cup semi final first leg.

Saints staged the first leg at St Mary's with both sides looking to get the advantage ahead of the second leg.

And it is Southampton who hold that narrow lead but it could have been much more comfortable if Redmond in particular had taken every chance that came his way, with Liverpool keeper Loris Karius denying more than once on the night.

Redmond did score the only goal of the game as the Southampton winger was played in behind the Liverpool defence by a Jay Rodriguez pass.

He then found the net.

Redmond's goal had come shortly after he had been denied by an advancing Karius and it would prove to be the pattern of the game.

Karius pulled off another save from a Redmond effort and in the final 10 minutes when the Southampton player had beaten him, his chip came off the crossbar.

Ireland strike Shane Long had a role in fashioning that chance having come on late in the second half.

The second leg will take place on Wednesday January 25th.

Likely final opponents for the winner of the semi final tie will be Manchester United, who hold a 2-0 aggregate lead over struggling Hull City after Tuesday night's first leg.

United's second leg takes place on January 26th.
