The New England Patriots could find themselves delving into fourth-string quarterback territory, following a thumb injury which has felled Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett sustained the injury to his right thumb during Thursday night's win over the Houstan Texans, with several fans now calling for Julian Edelman to be dispatched as emergency cover instead of signing someone new.
In the absence of their resident quaterback Tom Brady who is currently serving a suspension, the Pats have been forced to draw from their reinforcements until Brady is eligible for selection again after Deflategate.
But the injuries have yet to cause an adverse impact as they lead the American Football Conference on 3-0.
Jimmy Garoppolo was shaping up to be an adequate replacement after week 1 but a shoulder injury in the next game against the Dolphins has temporarily sidelined him. Brissett was drafted in this week and completed 11 of 19 passes for 103 yards and rushed for a 27-yard touchdown in the 27-0 win on Thursday.
Their next fixture is against Buffalo Bills on October 2nd.
Meanwhile, the calls for Edelman to get the call-up are rife on social media:

No Tom Brady, no Jimmy Garoppolo, & now a Jacoby Brissett injury?
Julian Edelman might know a thing or two about quarterbacking. pic.twitter.com/3Yyo8pfQa5

If Julian Edelman leads the #Patriots to a win at QB, Bill Belichick gets his own Hall of Fame. We'll build a new one exclusively for him.

I want to see Julian Edelman play quarterback more than I want to graduate college.
