New FIFA president could face ban after secret emails show deleted recording of council meeting

Gianni Infantino could be facing a ban just months after being elected president of FIFA at a ceremony in Zurich.

The 46-year-old replaced Sepp Blatter as the President of FIFA after the former president was placed under criminal investigation by Swiss authorities back in March. A probe into corruption in soccer resulted in the arrest of top officials in May 2015 and further arrests into 2016.

"I want to be the president of all of you. I travelled through the globe and I will continue to do this. I want to work with all of you to restore and rebuild a new era where we can put football in the centre of the stage,” Infantino said just after his election.

“Fifa has gone through sad times, moments of crisis. But those times are over.” Later, he told the media: “We enter now a new era. We’ll restore the image of Fifa and make sure everybody will be happy with what we do.”

Prior to joining UEFA, lawyer Gianni Infantino worked as the secretary general of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) at the University of Neuchatel, having previously been an adviser to a variety of football bodies, including the Italian, Spanish and Swiss football leagues.
