Newcastle's Jonjo Shelvey hit with FA ban for racial abuse

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been given a five-game ban by the English Football Association for using abusive or insulting words towards an opponent.

The punishment dates back to an incident with Romain Saiss against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 87th minute of a 2-0 defeat on September 17th.

According to the FA, "it was further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) was an “Aggravated Breach” as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality".

Shelvey has also been fined £100,000 and told to attend an FA education course.

He has seven days to appeal the verdict once he has received the written reasons for the punishment.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Swansea City in January 2016 after three seasons in Wales.

The Charlton Athletic youth graduate and ex-Liverpool midfielder has won six England caps during his career, although the last of those appearances came back in 2015.
