Norwegian prodigy Martin Odegaard to join Heerenveen on loan

Martin Odegaard, the Norwegian footballing prodigy, is to leave Real Madrid and join Dutch Eredivisie side Heerenveen on loan.

The 18-year-old joined Real Madrid in January 2015 from Norwegian side Stromgodset. Odegaard made his debut for his local team as a 15-year-old in the Tippeligaen, before moving to Spain.

Odegaard has struggled to impress at Madrid, moving in and out of the the club's Castilla side in the Segunda B. He only played twice for the first team, coming on in place of Cristiano Ronaldo to make his competitive debut at the end of the 2014/15 La Liga season.

In November, he made his second appearance for the first team. He completed 90 minutes in Real's facile 6-1 victory over lower-league Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey.

As a 15-year-old, he became the youngest player to play a senior international for Norway. Odegaard has since played a further eight times, and was an active part of the squad that failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

The move to the Netherlands, will be seen as a chance for the teenager to kickstart his career once more, after a period of stagnation in Madrid. On Monday night, the Eredivisie high-flyers confirmed the move.

Odegaard is expected to stay in the Netherlands until the end of the season. If he impresses in Friesland, the loan move could extend for another season as the Norwegian looks to hit the heights of what his early career promised.
