Novak Djokovic's aim of winning a calender-year Gran Slam is in tatters after losing to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon.
The America, who was the 28th seed, had to battle the elements along with Djokovic but held his never to win 7-6 6-1 3-6 7-6.
Play was suspended on Friday evening and resumed on Saturday afternoon but it wasn't long before the tarp was called into action as the heavens opened over Wimbledon and both men retired from the court.
Having won the first two sets, Querrey readied himself for a comeback and had plenty of time to think of what could go wrong during the rain delays. The comeback started but never fully materialised. Djokovic won the third set but the fourth and final set turn into somewhat of an epic encounter with both men trading games until Querrey finally broke the Serb's resistance.
Djokovic won the first two majors of the year having defeated Andy Murray in the Australian Open and the French Open.
The 29-year-old was aiming for his third consecutive Wimbledon title having beaten Roger Federer in the previous two finals.
This loss will open the door for either Andy Murray or Roger Federer to claim Djokovic's vacated title.
Querrey said after the game, "It's incredible, especially to do it here at Wimbledon. I'm so ecstatic, so happy. I think today I played the break points well. Every time he had a break point I was able to come up with a big serve. He came out and got the first four games, fortunately for me we had another rain delay and I got to regroup. I'm just taking it one round at a time, I'm not even sure who I'm playing next."
