John Giles believes that Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance against Paris St Germain is the latest in the line of showings that prove he is a ‘genius’ suited to the biggest stage.

Speaking to Nathan and Kev on Off the Ball, John gave his opinions as the Portuguese became the first player to score 100 goals for the same club in Europe’s premier competition.

“The big nights were made for Ronaldo. The matches were made for Ronaldo. Even last night, I was watching it and it was typical Ronaldo – he hadn’t had a kick of the ball, didn’t influence the game at all in general play – and he scores two goals.

John believes that Ronaldo’s adaptation from a wide forward to an out-and-out poacher shows the different characteristics that he has brought into his game.

“That’s his game.  My summing up of Ronaldo is, in general play, he’s not bothered. But when it comes to scoring a goal, or getting in a position to score a goal – he’s an absolute genius.”

“He knows before he goes out on the pitch that if you are the goalscorer, you are going to be the hero and the star. So he concentrates on that.

“I’ve never known a player with his ability go for fifty minutes without touching the ball, and not be bothered. But he can do it, and when it comes to a goal-scoring chance, he becomes a genius.”

For more interviews, you can tune into the show from 7-10pm weekdays.
