On this day 17 years ago, Aston Villa fielded the last all English side in a Premier League game

A bizarre statistic has been floating around Twitter this morning.

It's the type of statistic that genuinely boggles the mind and shines a light on a bygone era of football: 

The thought of an all-English starting XI nowadays would seem strange to say the least, but lets have a look at how Aston Villa lined up.

On the day there were also three substitutes for this; a young Gareth Barry, Stan Collymore and Mark Draper.    

Some have argued that the Middlesbrough team of '06 was the last but as is pointed out, James Morrison of that squad went on to play for Scotland.
