Open Championship returns to Royal St George's for 2020

Golf's Open Championship will return to Royal St George's in 2020.

It will be the first time the course in Sandwich has hosted the event since Darren Clarke's memorable victory six years ago.

The club voted to admit women members in 2015.

Before that, Royal St George's had maintained a policy of not admitting female members for 128 years, before voting to change the rules.

Reacting to the news that the Open will return to Royal St George's, Darren Clarke said: "It was an unbelievable feeling to lift the Claret Jug and know that my name was displayed on the trophy alongside so many of the greatest players ever to play the game. The Open is what it is all about for me as a golfer and it is the championship I always dreamt of winning from when I first took up the game as a kid.

"I have so many wonderful memories from that week at Sandwich and I will be thrilled to go back there for The Open in three years' time."

Royal Birkdale golf course hosts the 2017 Open from July 20th to 23rd.

Royal St George's has hosted the Open on 14 occasions, with the first time coming all the way back in 1894.
