Orlando City SC honour Pulse nightclub victims with rainbow seats in new stadium

The events of June 12th, 2016 in Pulse Nightclub will never be forgotten in America.

49 people were killed by a gunman in the Orlando nightclub in the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in American history. It was also the deadliest incident against LGBT people in the history of the country.

The gay nightclub was targeted by a lone gunman in an act of violence that shocked the country, but brought the city of Orlando closer together.

Numerous commemorations have taken place since the tragedy, but MLS-side Orlando City have gone a step further, in an unprecedented move. The team are to move into their new 25,000-seat stadium ahead of the forthcoming season, and have decided to install 49 rainbow coloured seats in the stadium.

Section 12 of the lower tier, will see the seats placed in the middle of the remaining purple seats, that will be installed in the rest of the stadium. That section was chosen in memory of the June 12th date.

Orlando City SC president Phil Rawlins spoke at the launch, and confirmed the seats were placed in such a prominent location, as a reminder of what happened last summer.

"These are regular season-ticket holder seats. We put them in section 12 because obviously we felt that was pertinent. It was June 12th, as you know, last year when the tragedy happened. They’re right here in Section 12. They’re right down by the benches. They’ll certainly be seen by everyone inside the stadium as a very significant remind of that day."

The team are about to play in their third season in MLS, but it looks like they are already entrenched in the Orlando community.
