Oscar Pistorius denies suicide "speculations" after being rushed to hospital

*Updated 11.38*

Reports suggest Oscar Pistorius was rushed to Pretoria's Kalafoong hospital on Saturday after suffering injuries to his wrists in jail.

According to the report from City Press, a correctional services spokesperson said Pistorius told authorities he had injured his wrists when he fell out of bed, but conflicting reports from a witness suggested that the Paralympian had intentionally injured himself.

He was reportedly found by prison officers and taken to hospital, with one of the security guards at the hospital saying “he had bad cuts on his wrists and the doctors kept wrapping bandages around them.”

He has since been returned to jail following treatment. Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the correctional services department, said Pistorius told officials that he suffered injuries after falling out of bed.

"Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt," said Nxumalo. "As a policy principle we cannot further discuss a particular offender's personal condition in the public domain."

Pistorius has been in and out of jail since 2014, when he was convicted of culpable homicide in the February 2013 death of Reeva Steenkamp. The runner has always insisted the shooting was a mistake, saying he thought an intruder had entered his home and he feared for his safety.

In July, the culpable homicide verdict was overruled and he was convicted of murder, at which point he was served a six year jail sentence.

Last month prosecutors said they would appeal Pistorius' sentence, saying it was too lenient.
