Pacquaio primed for title fight

Boxing icon Manny Pacquaio is gearing up for his welterweight title fight against Jessie Vargas in November.

Boxing's only eight-weight titlist is due to come out of a brief retirement against current WBO welterweight title holder Jessie Vargas on November 5th.

Speaking to the Manilla Times, former world champion Gerry Penalosa said: “Manny is far superior than Vargas, who is not on the same level with him. It is going to be an easy performance by Manny."

“I believe Pacquiao will win by stoppage in the later rounds," he added.

Vargas holds an impressive record of 27-1 but lost to past Pacquiao rival Tim Bradley by unanimous decision in June 2015.

Pacquiao now holds a record of 58-6-2 and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Bradley last April. The Filipino retired after the bout to focus on his duties as a senator but had second thoughts and is now getting back in the ring.

His promoter Top Rank expects him to fight at least twice more in 2017 although Pacquiao's hopes of a rematch with Floyd Mayweather appear to be over as the American retired with a perfect 49-0 record.

The pair fought in May 2015 and generated a record of over 4.4 million pay-per-view buys but the contest was a relatively dour affair after Pacquiao injured his shoulder early in the bout.
