Paddy McCourt joins Finn Harps

Finn Harps have announced the signing of Northern Ireland international Paddy McCourt.

The Derry native returns to the League of Ireland for the first time since 2008. He previously played with Derry City and Shamrock Rovers.

McCourt enjoyed a successful career in Scotland and England. He won two league titles and two Scottish Cups with Celtic, before moving to England to join Barnsley.

After spells with Barnsley, Brighton and Hove Albion, Notts County and Luton Town, McCourt returned home last summer, and despite reports of a return to Derry City, he joined Irish League side Glenavon.

The 33-year-old trained with Dundalk in a bid to join the League of Ireland champions, but it is the Ballybofey side that have signed the talented winger, after impressing on trial.

Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan was delighted with the signing, despite the season beginning on Friday evening, against Cork City.

"Paddy has come in late so it will take him a little time to get to know the other lads. He has that natural ability to make things happen and we will need him to produce that quality because we are going to be up against very well organised defences in this division."

McCourt himself said he was happy to return to the League of Ireland, after nearly a decade away.

"I have trained a couple of times with Harps now and played against Cabinteely in Saturday. It’s a good setup here with Ollie Horgan and Paul Hegarty who are doing a good job. I’m looking forward now to being part of the squad for the new season and I want to play my part in keeping Harps in the Premier Division".

The Derry native has played 18 times for Northern Ireland, scoring two goals.
