Pat Hickey granted loan to pay bail

Updated 2/12

Pat Hickey has been granted a loan by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) to pay the bail required to get his passport back.

Earlier this month, a judge in Brazil said Mr Hickey - who has stepped aside from his role as president of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) - will be allowed to return to Ireland for medical treatment.

It was on the condition that he pays bail of €410,000.

He has also been ordered to continue to comply with the legal process.

While the judge noted there was a risk that Mr Hickey would not return to Brazil, she said she had to balance this with concerns for his health.

The 71-year-old is accused of being involved in an international touting ring in Olympic tickets issued to the OCI - a charge Mr Hickey strongly denies.

A spokesperson for the OCI has previously confirmed that it would not be paying Mr Hickey's bail bond.

It has now been reported that Mr Hickey will receive a €400,000 loan from the ANOC.

A statement sent to Newstalk.com by the ANOC reads: "ANOC can confirm that on humanitarian grounds they have agreed to temporarily loan the bail payment for Patrick Hickey to return home for medical reasons.

"The decision was unanimously approved by ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and all ANOC Vice-Presidents via a postal vote on 20 November 2016.

"The payment was made as a temporary loan so that Patrick Hickey could meet his bail requirements and return to Ireland where he can receive medical treatment for a heart condition."

The statement adds that the loan must be repaid in full, and other terms and conditions surrounding the bail payment will remain confidential.
