Pat Nevin on marking wonderkid Giggs on his debut

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

The news was a bit overshadowed by Louis Van Gaal's appointment at Manchester United manager.

But today the Dutchman's new assistant Ryan Giggs called time on a long and very successful playing career as a one-club player at Man United.

The Welshman made his league debut against Everton on March 2nd 1992. And guess who was marking him?

None other than Pat Nevin, our Monday Night Football pundit who joined us on the line to chat about playing and then meeting a young Giggs.

"I was marking him would you believe! I think he came on as a substitute. I'd been playing in the right midfield area and he was on the left hand side. We'd vaguely been told about the super wonderkid and that he was quick. That was about it," said Nevin.

"I actually got to meet him soon after that. Brian McClair was a good mate of mine and he brought Giggsy round to my house, almost to show him off like a trophy - almost to say 'watch out for his one, he's going to be pretty good!' He was unbelievably shy, couldn't speak!"

Pat also turned his thoughts to the potential for success for Louis Van Gaal and the end of the trophy drought at Arsenal. Nevin feels Arsene Wenger will have to strengthen.
