Paul Dunne books his place at The Open

Wicklow golfer Paul Dunne has booked his place at The Open for the third year in a row.

Dunne famously co-led the tournament last year, as an amateur, going into the final round at St. Andrews. The 23-year-old was in contention to win the Claret Jug until the back-nine on the Monday afternoon of the weather-delayed tournament. He eventually finished in a tie for 30th place.

The Greystones native won the Final Qualifying tournament at Woburn, near Milton Keynes. It's the third year in a row that Dunne has come through the two-round shootout at the Buckinghamshire course.

As Dunne was impressing in Woburn, Colin Montgomerie was rolling back the years in Scotland at the Gailes Links. The Scottish veteran finished third in the Final Qualifying tournament the course that is situated less than ten miles from Royal Troon, the host of The Open next month.

Montgomerie has not played in The Open since 2010. He finished in second place at the tournament in 2005, finishing five shots behind Tiger Woods at St. Andrews.

The former Ryder Cup captain is best known for his television work nowadays, but remains one of the most successful players on the Seniors Tour.
