Paul McGinley targets busy 2017 schedule and admits he has been a "part-time golfer"

Paul McGinley has his sights set on a busy schedule in 2017, with the 2014 Ryder Cup winning captain confirming he will be playing more events on the Senior Tour.

McGinley has cut back on his playing commitments over the last two years as he prepared his European team for victory at Gleneagles.

The 50-year-old is currently competing at the British Masters and says juggling his punditry role with Sky Sports and competing on the European Tour has been difficult to balance.

"I haven't played very much, I think this is my fifth event this year, maybe my sixth," he told Nick Dye. "I think it was the same last year and the same the year before.

"So I've kind of been a part-time golfer the last few years. But last month I stepped it up a little bit. I played in Italy and in Dunhill, even though I've missed the cuts it was more competitive golf and I got to practice in between. It bore fruit this week with two good rounds."

McGinley has also struggled with injury, issues with his knees have hampered him but the Dubliner says that surgeries have left him feeling capable of competing at the highest level again.

"I'm in good shape and I'm working on my fitness... If I hit the ball as well as I have done over the next two days I'll be delighted.

"I turned 50 at Christmas so I'm going to play some senior events next year. Maybe 10 or 12 of those and then maybe two or three on the main tour.

"I'm looking at going from three or four events over the last couple of years to 15 next year, hence the little bit more practice."

Asked if he was still up for the game itself he replied: "Absolutely, I love it."
