Paul O'Connell joins BBC punditry team for 2017 Six Nations

Former Ireland captain Paul O'Connell will be part of the BBC punditry team for the 2017 Six Nations Championship.

The Munster great retired from professional rugby in February 2016 and as a new addition to the BBC's team of TV analysts, will join the likes of ex-Irish captain Keith Wood, former England centre Jeremy Guscott, ex-Wales internationals Martyn Williams and Jonathan Davies, former France back Thomas Castaignede and ex-England hooker Brian Moore among those in studio.

O'Connell won the Six Nations three times as a player, doing so in 2009 as a Grand Slam winner and then as captain in 2015. He was also part of the victorious 2014 team.

In a statement, the 37 year old said, "the Six Nations is a tournament incredibly close to my heart and I’m delighted to be joining the BBC team.

"It’s a very different experience now watching on from the side-lines but I’m really looking forward to drawing on my own experiences to give the audience as much insight as I can into the action on the pitch."

Joe Schmidt's Ireland get their 2017 Six Nations campaign underway on February 4th against Scotland in Murrayfield.

The Irish squad for the opening two games against Scotland and Italy will be named on Sunday.
