Pele prepares to sell off his collection of memorabilia in a public auction

Pele is preparing to sell off his massive memorabilia collection.

Items from the Brazilian's football career, including his three World Cup winner's medals are to go under the hammer in Julien's Auctions in London. Three separate bids of £70,000 have already been placed on the three medals.

The 75-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He revolutionised the game, and was part of a Brazil team that won three of the four World Cups between 1958 and 1970.

Pele initally retired as a one-club man having played for his local club Santos. He came out of retirement to move to America and play with the New York Cosmos in the NASL. The Brazilian almost single-handedly pushed the sport into the American psyche.

Such was his popularity, he earned a starring role in the 1981 movie Escape to Victory. The boots worn by Pele in the movie among the lots for auction next week.

Since handing up his boots, Pele has primarily worked in an ambassadorial role in the game, and is seen as legend in his native Brazil. Numerous non-footballing items will be up for auction, including items from the non-football sporting world.

One of the most modern items in the auctions is Pele's London 2012 accreditation. He attended the closing ceremony as London handed over hosting duties to Rio de Janeiro.

The auction takes place in London beginning on June 7th, with a public exhibition taking place in the city starting on June 1st. Irish fans have already had a chance to see some of the items in an exhibition in Newbridge Silverware in Kildare.

Pele has suffered from recent health issues, but the auction company are unsure if that is why he has decided to sell off such valuable items. Speaking to the BBC,  Dan Nelles from Julien's Auctions said; "There are many reasons, there are clearly some personal ones that he alone knows about."
