Pep Guardiola claimed his third Bundesliga title in three years over the weekend, a clean sweep of the German top tier before departing for Manchester City in the summer.
Speaking on last night's Off The Ball, European football correspondent Ben Lyttleton said that despite Guardiola's shortcomings in the champions league, the Catalan manager has laid the foundations for a team which can play together for years to come.
"The message from within the club is that it's been a success and that what he's done is built a platform for the future" he said.
"It is still a young squad. If you look at some of the players there, there's a lot of players there between 24 and 27... This is a side that he's building that can play together for the next three or four years.
"That wasn't what it was like when he took over and Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry were approaching their injury prone years and Bastian Schweinsteiger was spending more time on the sidelines than in the team."
The Champions League has proved a difficult hurdle for the Bavarians, the 2013 champions lost to Real Madrid, Barcelona and recently Atletico Madrid in three consecutive semi-final exits. The former teams went on to win the competition whereby the latter will now meet their Madrid rivals in the final later this month.
"The first two seasons the champions league was a big knock on him, but this year it didn't seem to be as bad partly because of the nature of this semi-final. In the past he was hammered by Barcelona and Real partly because he made mistakes. This year, Bayern were fantastic in the first half against Atletico and if Thomas Muller scores the penalty they're through to the final. How you can blame a coach for every event on the pitch... It really depends on the coach. This season I feel he's been more faultless than in previous seasons."
