Peter Alliss thinks women should marry club members if they want to play at Muirfield

'The Voice of Golf' Peter Alliss has claimed that if women want to play at Muirfield, they should marry a member of the club.

Alliss, who works now as a commentator with the BBC was speaking on Thursday after the Scottish club voted not to allow female members join the club. As a result, the course was taken off The Open rota by the R&A.

"I dont't think the true facts have come out in this case", Alliss told BBC 5 Live. "I was at the Open Championship two or three years ago and I used to go in for a coffee every morning. There's a very nice drawing room in the clubhouse at Muirfield and it was full of ladies who were all chatting. 'Hello, Peter how are you doing?' - and me in my usual, jocular, quiet way suggested, 'What great times are coming, you'll be able to join the club.'"

The 85-year-old added; "There was a look of horror on the faces of the ladies, ladies whose husbands were members, and I was met with 'Good Lord, no we don't want to be members.'"

"'If we joined, our husbands  have to pay thousands of pounds for our entry fee and our subscriptions. We can come and play here and do pretty much what we wish for nothing.'"

The former Ryder Cup player added that; "if somebody wants to join, you better get married to someone who is a member".

Muirfield last hosted The Open in 2013, when Phil Mickleson won the tournament on -3.
